Club History

The Potomac Center Toastmasters Club was chartered on May 1, 1994 under the name of Golden Portals Toastmasters because club meetings were then held in the Portals building. Audrey Wright, a longstanding member of Golden Portals Toastmasters, achieved the Distinguished Toastmasters Award (DTM) status. On June 25, 2010, our members voted to change our name from Golden Portals to Potomac Center Toastmasters as of July 1, 2010 to reflect our current location at Potomac Center Plaza. On May 1, 2013, our club celebrated 19 years as an active Toastmasters club!

Potomac Center Toastmasters is located at 550 12th Street, Potomac Center Plaza South, Washington, D.C. We are assigned to Area 31, Division C, District 27. Our club members actively participate in Toastmasters activities at the Club, Area, Division, and District level. Two of our members have held District offices; both Audrey Wright and Mary Williams have served as Area Governors. Also, two of our members have represented Potomac Center Toastmasters in the Area, Division, and District contests. For two consecutive years, a Potomac Center Toastmasters member came in first place at the Area 31 Table Topics contest (Mary Williams in 2010 and Zina Watkins in 2011). Both members advanced to compete at the District level in the Table Topics competition.

Membership at Potomac Center Toastmasters is open and club meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month. We encourage anyone interested in improving and enhancing their communication and leadership skills in a nurturing and supportive environment to join our club.
